Bolton has seen many changes over the years. One example is the gradual transition from a characteristic ‘northern industrial town’ whose skyline bristled with the chimneys of its many dozens of mills. In each issue of Chai Times we will compare a picture of a notable area of Bolton with one from the past. Many readers may be surprised at how dramatically some familiar spots have changed. Today we look at one such major change. In the1960s work began on filling in the Croal Valley and building the dual carriageway we now know as St Peter’s Way – part of the A666. The first picture shows the Croal Valley in the 1950s and the second, taken from almost exactly the same spot, shows St Peter’s Way in the 2000s.
