Researchers in the USA have found that fructose, the sugar found in fruit, can increase craving for high calorie foods. In a small study, volunteers consumed a sugary drink containing fructose one day and one containing glucose on another. Brain scans showed that they reacted more strongly to pictures of food after eating the fructose drinks. The World Health Organisation (WHO) says that a small amount of sugar each day (around six teaspoons) is OK, but most adults and children in the UK consume too much sugar. Expert advisors to the UK government have been reviewing available evidence and will soon issue updated advice.
