Albert Halls Bolton is set to transform its theatre space for the venue’s first in-house production since its impressive renovation.
Hit musical ‘The Last Five Years’ will run from 21 – 23 November. The emotionally powerful and intimate musical looks at the relationship of New Yorkers Cathy and Jamie. The show’s unconventional structure consists of Cathy telling her story backwards while Jamie tells his story chronologically; the two characters only meet once, at their wedding in the middle of the show. For the first time in the theatre’s history the production will be staged in the round to deliver an immersive and intimate audience experience.
The musical will be directed by James Edgington, with musical direction from Lol Harris, and will star Sam Lupton and Stephanie Clift, who are reuniting for the production after previously playing opposite each other in the UK tour of Little Shop of Horrors. Sam is originally from Durham and trained at Manchester School of Theatre. His recent work includes The Lady Killers (UK Tour), Spring and Port Wine (Oldham), Little Shop Of Horrors (UK Tour), Wicked (West End), My Brilliant Friend for BBC Radio 4, Avenue Q (UK Tour), Marshmallow (Short Film) and performances at the Liverpool Playhouse, the Royal Exchange Theatre and Bolton Octagon Theatre.
Stephanie had a love for performing from a very young age and went on to train at the Arts Educational Schools, London. TV credits include ‘Broadchurch’ and ‘Call the Midwife’. Stephanie played the part of Audrey in the UK Tour of ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ and most recently was Holly in the UK tour of ‘The Wedding Singer’.
Written by Tony and Drama Desk Award-winning composer, Jason Robert Brown (Songs for a New World, Parade), The Last Five Years premiered at Chicago’s Northlight Theatre in 2001 and was then produced off-Broadway in March 2002, before touring the world to critical acclaim. It has since been adapted into a film starring Anna Kendrick and is quickly becoming a beloved classic. Cathy is a vivacious struggling actress, and Jamie a hotshot up-and-coming novelist. Watch their relationship from tragic end to hopeful beginning and hopeful beginning to tragic end, as Jamie and Cathy share their separate tales of their last five years together.
