New York City is considering new rules requiring restaurants to warn customers about foods with high salt content. Dishes containing more than the recommended daily intake of sodium would have to have a salt- shaker symbol next to that item on menus in restaurant chains. Eating too much salt is thought to increase the risk of high blood pressure, which can lead to heart disease and strokes. New York is the first US city to introduce such rules, which could be introduced as early as December this year. The move is part of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s plan to achieve a 25% reduction in premature mortality by 2040.
