Urvashi Tulsidas has been involved with the Sakhi Group since its formation in 2009. Sakhi means ‘friend’ and the group, also known as Friends for Life, helps local and national charities by holding fundraising events in Bolton. In 2104 the group organised four big events, including a Gujarati Folk Dance at Memory Lane Hall in Deane, which was attended by more than 500 people. The group raised £3,425 for Cancer Research UK, from this and other events. The group also ran the Race for Life. Recently, Sakhi group organised Strictly Bollywood fund-raising event, which was held in the Market Place in Bolton. Activities included face painting, henna and glitter painting, Asian arts and crafts and of course traditional dancing from different regions of India. ”Miss Bolton, Laura Louise Collins, was there and also Miss Bury, Chelsea Edgar” said Urvashi. ”Our Bollywood dancers taught their moves to the two girls and then the pair went head-to-head in a dance-off! The whole event was a great success and raised over £800 in aid of Bolton Hospice Originally from Gujarat, she came to the UK when she was married in 1991 and spoke very little English at that time. Now she is teaching at Bolton College in a variety of areas such as arts and crafts, healthy cooking, yoga and confidence building.
