Souls Migrated
WiN (Women in Neighbourhoods) has received a Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) Sharing Heritage grant, it was announced today. This exciting project, ‘Souls Migrated’ is based in Bolton and led by WiN has been given £10k to make a short documentary about people who have migrated from other places and have chosen to make Bolton their home.
‘Souls Migrated’ will work with residents from various cultures and backgrounds. There will be opportunities for volunteers to learn new skills and develop existing ones. A minimum of 12 young people will be trained to develop media and communication skills. This project will organise sessions for BME communities, refugees and asylum seekers encouraging intergenerational sharing experiences of settling in Bolton and memories of countries of origin. These memories and experiences will feature in a documentary.
Commenting on the award, Gulnaz Brennan, Founder of WiN, said: “it’s great that we have been awarded this grant and we can’t wait to get started. With over 70 languages spoken in Bolton and people coming and settling from all over the world, the project will involve talking to people, recording their memories and sharing their experiences. It will hopefully change people perceptions and stereotypes and help make people more understanding and tolerant of other peoples beliefs, cultures and traditions.”
Nathan Lee, regional HLF head Head of the Heritage Lottery Fund North West, said: “Sharing Heritage is a wonderful opportunity for communities to delve into their local heritage and we are delighted to be able to offer this grant so that ‘Souls Migrated’ can embark on a real journey of discovery. Heritage means such different things to different people, and HLF’s funding offers a wealth of opportunities for groups to explore and celebrate what’s important to them in their area.”
