Oriental Fashion Reigns For Spring Summer 2014
It’s already a few months since New York Fashion Week took place – the week when those in fashion, and those with a love of fashion, gather together to celebrate the forthcoming collections for Spring Summer 2014. It was an
exciting time because NYFW is the opening location paving the way high- street trends in 2014. In essence it’s the first look the world has at what designers predict to be big in terms of styles, colours and textures. And it’s great to see that the Fashion World is looking around the globe for inspiration.
Opening Ceremony
Opening Ceremony is the fashion protégé of the brains behind Kenzo, Carol Lim and Humberto Leon. It was their first ever New York Fashion Week and was met with a level of expectation that wasn’t deflated. The collection was heavily inspired by the Orient with kimono style wrap tops, wide calotte trousers and traditional Chinese inspired prints.
What the catwalk displays the high-street shortly follows so we predict lots of Oriental inspired pieces available, in store, from Spring Summer 2014. In fact this Asian influence is already penetrating the fashion forward high-
street, ahead of 2014, with mainly retailers taking inspiration in terms of print. Bohoo.com have a full ready to wear party collection based round prints of the Orient and describe their Eastern inspired collection as inspired by the Oriental themes favoured by designers in AW 12:
“Fashion takes a trip to the east this winter and discovers design and decorative elements from the Orient. Designer Dries Van Noten and Proenza Schouler sent oriental infused dresses and artisanal outerwear down their A/W 12 runways. From literal to dragon prints and flourishing eastern flora to kimono shapes and mandarin collars, all influence were remixed and ready for the street” – boohoo.com
Forever fast to adopt a fashion trend ASOS also honour a trend they call Eastern Opulence:
“Fashion is in thrall to tales of ancient empires this season, as opalescent fabrics, traditional Oriental motifs and kimono detailing add an opium-soaked dose of mystery and glamour. Proenza Schouler’s modern, sporty take on the trend took the gold medal, teaming a Chinese-embroidered bomber jacket with an above-the-knee skirt and a tough boot. Fierce.” – asos.com
