Willow Hey Community GROWING PROJECT Open for Business

There was environment themed face painting for the children, arts and crafts and bouncy castles. Steve engaged lots of local children with seed bomb making and there were planting sessions on the day which the children could take home at the end of the session. Lots of local families from the Cawdor/Campbell and flower estate have signed up to regularly engaging in the project and they will be provided growing start up kits for families interested in growing in their own back gardens at home. (At the end of the session the seed bombs where divided up amongst those who had made them, and will be scattered across the local estate in due course.)

Another activity that proved popular with the young people was feeding the chickens, in the space of a couple of hours ‘ ladies’ had become a major attraction on site and were visited by practically ever person at the event. The Hens will provide eggs that will be distributed to two local community groups who feed homeless people in the area.

The great thing about the event was the willingness of all who attended to get involved in today’s proceedings, Chief Executive of Bolton at Home Jon Lord OBE helped to man the barbeque, Neighbourhood managers rolled their sleeves up and mucked in.

It was also great to see members of the Daisy Dell community turn up and support the event, a big thank you to Anthony Holt and the Daisy Dell folk. “We hope that the site will be educational community growing hub were local residents and families can meet, socialise, learn new skills and get growing healthy organic food which in turn will tackle food poverty in the local area”

Weekly gardening and food- growing sessions are held on the site on Thursday mornings between 10am and mid-day and a variety of educational workshops and learning sessions take place between 1pm and 3pm, also on Thursdays. At these sessions people can learn such things as jam and preserve making, keeping chickens for eggs, making boxes for birds and other wildlife, making healthy fruit cordials and a host of other skills.
